In December 2018 I visited the UN refugee shelters in the Brazilian cities of Boa Vista and Pacaraima, on the border with Venezuela to document the situation of immigrants and integration with the new country. UNHCR's Global Trends study estimates that there are currently 68.5 million people displaced by force in the world. Of this total, 25.4 million are refugees. Recent statements by the new Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro project a worrying scenario. In his first week as national representative, Bolsonaro withdrew Brazil from the agreement that defines the guidelines for receiving immigrants from the UN, making clear an anti-immigration stance.
