On Friday, January 25, 2018 Dam 1 of the Córrego do Feijão mine broke due to a crack in its structure dumping tons of ore sludge with mud. The breakdown of the dam occurred around noon and hit hundreds of employees who ate lunch in the restaurant below the reservoir. The mudslide hit countless homes accounting for the death of more than 380 people in the tourist town of Brumadinho, a small municipality with just over 20.000 inhabitants. In the city, everyone had a relative or family member who died in what was the worst socio-environmental disaster in Brazil.

Brumadinho story published in the July issue of National Geographic Brasil.
